Post 5: Changes to my study programme

I am currently studying anthropology at the University of Chile, I am in my second year of my degree. One of the reasons why I entered the university was because of its curriculum, which I consider to be very well structured. The first two years are the initial cycle, so we have introductory courses to the world of anthropology such as the formation of modern society, fundamental problems of anthropology, philosophy of social sciences, social theory, complex societies, contemporary problems of anthropology, among others.

The total duration of the course is five years and has three different mentions, on the one hand, there is the mention of social anthropology focused mainly on the study of contemporary human groups, physical anthropology oriented to the study of human biology in relation to culture and archaeology that deals with the investigation and analysis of the material culture of societies of the remote and recent past. It is worth mentioning that, although the initial duration of the course is five years, students have the possibility of taking more than one mention, which would imply an increase to six years.

In the last three years of the degree course, students take a specialisation, while the last year is focused on the memory workshop that leads to the degree project and the professional internship. As for the faculty where anthropology is taught, it can be said that it has a decent infrastructure, however we still do not have student casinos or facilities in terms of technology, the computers we have are quite old and some of them are faulty, so I think that it is essential to solve those situations. I think that the workload so far has not been excessive, but on the contrary, the teachers have a lot of flexibility and willingness in most of the courses.

In conclusion, I can say that so far I have liked the course, but that does not mean that it can be improved, I think it is important to appreciate the courses in their own way, as there are some where I think the objectives are not met or the methodology is not the most correct, as well as the practical or field work is essential to complement what is learned in theory.
