Post 6: My experience learning English at the university

Imagen
My experience studying English at university has been quite good, especially considering the level at which I am studying. However, the previous level I didn't like the methodology taught by the teacher, despite this I have been able to reinforce content from my previous level as well as the current one and in this way generate a better command of the language. As for the methodologies taught with respect to the classes, I consider that the face-to-face modality is more focused and personal, however for reasons of feasibility and convenience of the students' and teachers' time, the classes should be online or taught through a hybrid form.  The evaluations of the course seem to me to be adequate, however they can be improved because they should be adapted to the university context. Perhaps giving readings or academic articles in English could help us to manage the language well, as well as practising English orally even more, without necessarily being evaluated, in any cas...

Post 5: Changes to my study programme

Imagen
I am currently studying anthropology at the University of Chile, I am in my second year of my degree. One of the reasons why I entered the university was because of its curriculum, which I consider to be very well structured. The first two years are the initial cycle, so we have introductory courses to the world of anthropology such as the formation of modern society, fundamental problems of anthropology, philosophy of social sciences, social theory, complex societies, contemporary problems of anthropology, among others.  The total duration of the course is five years and has three different mentions, on the one hand, there is the mention of social anthropology focused mainly on the study of contemporary human groups, physical anthropology oriented to the study of human biology in relation to culture and archaeology that deals with the investigation and analysis of the material culture of societies of the remote and recent past. It is worth mentioning that, although the initial dur...

Post 3: A job you would like to have in the future

Imagen
When I finish my degree I would like to work as a social anthropologist with a focus on migration. However, I have not yet determined whether this is what I really want, as I still have a long way to go in my career and discipline, but so far I really like this branch of knowledge and all that it entails. The anthropological understanding of migration, both past and present, is something that really appeals to me, especially understanding the current context of what is happening globally with migration and the impacts it is having on a socio-cultural level.   My dream is to work in an intergovernmental body in the elaboration of public policies that determine what I want to do and what I intend to do. In that sense, working in an agency like UNHCR (The UN Refugee Agency) would be the ideal way to have a proactive impact on the changes that need to be generated. I believe that the skills and abilities that anyone working in intergovernmental organisations should have are negoti...

Post 4: Time travel to the past or the future

Imagen
I consider that travelling to the future is better than travelling to the past because I can have indications of things that I can improve in the present. However, I consider that travelling to the past is also an excellent option because I can correct mistakes in the present that may be a consequence of my past, I would also love to meet historical figures like Martin Luther King or to be in moments and experiences that have determined the future, like the first world war, so that I can change and modify the things that were the triggers.   But, as I said, travelling to the future is better than travelling to the past. I would like to observe in the future the consequences of the actions of human beings, such as savage capitalism, especially after the year 2100. However, I consider that it is not the best option to stay in the future, as travelling to the present could change those situations to avoid them. However, I would like to travel even further into the future, around ...

Post 2: Best Holidays

Imagen
My best trip during a holiday was in the summer of 2021, in this trip I had the opportunity to go to the Lake District, precisely I was in Puerto Montt, Puerto Varas, Ensenada and Frutillar, during this trip I spent two and a half weeks.  Most of the time I was in the city of Puerto Montt, although I already knew it and I don't consider it to be the most beautiful place in the world, I had the opportunity to meet people that I value deeply and that have become very important people in my life. During this trip I went with my partner and friends joined me along the way.  Among the things I did were volunteer work, seeing beautiful landscapes, eating a lot and visiting those places. On this trip I had the opportunity to go around Lake Llanquihue on a catamaran, as well as in a kayak. I remember that one of those days we had the wonderful and crazy idea to walk in the rain along a road to Ensenada, we ended up soaking wet hahahaha.  This trip has been the best so far because...

Post 1: A country you would like to visit.

Imagen
A country I would like to visit. Without a doubt it would be the Netherlands, the quality of life is very good, and the way in which the state administers public policies and looks after its citizens is admirable, it has been characterised in this sense by reforming institutions such as the family and in this way allowing the entry of new ways of social coexistence. In addition, it has several places of great tourist interest, a clear example of this is the museum of Anne Frank's house, as well as the Vincent Van Gogh museum, the tourism sector in the country provides about 640,000 jobs a year. Amsterdam is the capital of the country and is one of the most visited destinations, what strikes me deeply is the main means of transport they use, which is the bicycle.  I would love to get to know the main tourist centres, as well as through the stories of citizens to know their opinion about the public policies implemented in the country, however, it is not my only interest since by know...

Post 8: Tell us about a subject you enjoy studying

Imagen
Many topics are very interesting to me, however not all of them have the characteristic of attracting me to study them, one of those topics that I am passionate about and that generates me joy and enthusiasm to investigate them is with respect to public policies and the global knowledge of them, especially when it has the character of how anthropology can influence the construction of these.  In fact, one of the main reasons why I chose a career in the social sciences was precisely because of how we can influence them, it has always been a very interesting topic for me since I consider that through these we not only build in the proposal of an objective, It has always been a very interesting subject for me since I consider that through these we do not only build in the proposition of an objective, but that being intermediary agents between the state and communities, we have the responsibility to be propositional and defend the construction of what emerges in the formulation of the ...

Post 7: Career Related Website OR An Expert on your Field

Imagen
Generally I do not visit many websites regarding my career, however on very specific occasions I consult articles of interest in the Revista Chilena de Antropología, which is a national and international journal published twice a year, particularly in July and December, and which receives manuscripts in both Spanish and English. Its main objective is to disseminate and discuss research in the different branches of anthropology in order to understand the multiple aspects of social and cultural realities.  As I mentioned before, I don't visit this site very often, but even so I visit it approximately two or three times a month, since apart from the two publications they make during the year, they receive contributions throughout the year. Without a doubt I recommend this website to all those who want to learn more about this beautiful profession as well as to anthropologists who are looking for knowledge beyond their area of specialization and/or interest.  I attach the link so ...

Post 6: How Can Your Major Make the World a Better Tell us why and how what you study (your major) can make the world a better place

Imagen
The degree I am studying is Anthropology. When I entered it, I did so with a strong conviction to serve society. In fact, I think it is fundamental to have this motivation as a social scientist. Ever since I was a child, I have been interested in the study of human beings, because I felt that through it I could serve the changes in society.  I do not yet have a clear idea of the specialisation I would like to pursue within this field. However, I think I am more inclined towards social anthropology, as it is the closest to what I have always wanted and where militant anthropology can be exercised more strongly. Moreover, it is based on direct contact with the subjects of study and where participant observation can give meaning to the proposal I mentioned earlier.  With my studies, I hope to contribute to the changes demanded by society, and where justice, truth and memory are the main focus of my work, despite the specialisation I may take in the near future.

Post 5: A Photo and its Story Write about a photograph you like.

Imagen
The photo that I'm showing you was taken in Pucón, in the middle of the Araucanía region. When I took it, I was with a person who is very special to me. That was the second time that I went to that city which I like a ton. We went to various parts of it. In the morning, we went to the beach to swim. We had a really good time in the Villarrica lake. For lunch, we ate an empanada. Finally, in the afternoon and to finish the day, we sat down to see the beautiful sunset while we ate some crunchy french fries and a tasty raspberry juice. It was precisely there where this photograph was taken.  Beyond the story behind this photo there are some very cool technical aspects. I really liked the beautiful framing, the intensity of the colors and how they all generate a soft shadow of the objects that embrace it. Definitely, this beautiful day culminated with the heavenly sunset that is reflected in the photograph.

Post 4: A Meal or Food You Really Like

Imagen
It is a bit difficult to define my favourite food since I am a fan of several, but without a doubt, the food that I enjoy the most and that I would eat for the rest of my life is sushi, although it is not a very common dish the few times that I enjoy it, it drives me crazy because I find that the mixture of ingredients makes a fantastic fusion of flavours that explode in my mouth.  Sushi is a dish of Japanese origin, which contains rice seasoned with rice vinegar, sugar, and salt and can be combined with other ingredients such as raw fish, seafood, vegetables, among others. This dish is one of the most recognized dishes in Japanese gastronomy and one of the most popular internationally. The steps to make sushi consist of five stages, first the rice has to be cooked, then the sushi-Zu has to be prepared, then the rice is cooled while the ingredients are prepared, and finally, the sushi is assembled.  As I mentioned before, one of the main components of this dish is the fish, an...

MY FAVORITE PIECE OF TECHNOLOGY

Imagen
Thinking about it I don't have a favourite technological object, because I am not very devoted to it, however, what could come close to that favourite object is the phone and/or computer, not because I find them as the best creation, nor because I like them very much, but because they are two of the tools that I use the most and that are vital for certain things that I do in the day to day. First, of all, I use the computer for study and recreation, especially because it has become essential for online classes and the work I have developed on them, without the computer, I would not be able to do many of the things I do on it; However, it should be stressed that the computer is not more essential than the mobile phone from my point of view. Since the phone allows me to do these things and more, especially because certain applications are specific to the mobile phone such as Whatsapp, and that today are essential for social communication taking into account that we are living in a p...

My Career

Since I was a little boy, I always thought about becoming a lawyer. It seemed like the right thing for me. And even before the age of 8, I used to dream about being an astronaut, because I was deeply invested in learning about the stars and constellations.  It was settled. I would become a lawyer. But that everything changed in seventh grade, when my mom mentioned the career she always wanted to study: anthropology. Even though I had heard of it and had a notion about what it meant, it was still very unknown to me, which led to a fascination and interest towards the subject, resulting in me researching and reading books and papers non-stop. When I started high school, I was clear about my intentions of pursuing anthropology, however, there were a couple other options that caught my eye. Both of them being on the same social sciences field as the career mentioned previously. First, there was sociology, which interested me because of its much diverse quantitative applications. The se...
